Jeffrey Y.H. Chung, M.D.
Dr. Chung received his Bachelors of Science at University of Michigan and completed his medical education at State University of New York at Buffalo. He received his ophthalmology training at Detroit Medical Center under Dr. Gary Abrams, Dr. James Puklin, Dr. Dean Elliott and Dr. Jayne Weiss. In a residency with retina heavyweights, Dr. Chung like many graduates, chose to pursue the subspecialty of retina. He went on to complete a standard two-year surgical retina fellowship at Cleveland Clinic under the teachings of Dr. Hillel Lewis, Dr. Andrew Schachat, Dr. Jonathan Sears, and Dr. Peter Kaiser. Despite a strong pedigree for academic medicine, Dr. Chung decided to pursue private practice as a solo practitioner.
Dr. Chung strongly believes in educating patients on their conditions and encourages patients to have an active role in their treatment plan.
“We regularly show patients photos and retina scans and explain the findings. If patients are receiving regular treatments, the patients often develop enough familiarity that they know whether they need treatment or not after seeing their own scans. We try to educate patients and explain options so that patients can make the best medical decision most consistent with their wishes and values.”
Dr Chung specializes in the treatment of intravitreal injections. He began his retina fellowship at the beginning of the era of intravitreal injections. During retina fellowship, he helped develop intravitreal injection techniques at Cleveland Clinic that he continues to practice daily. He is dedicated to the advancement of new treatments and therapies especially those of longer lasting injections for macular generation, diabetic retinopathy, and retinal vein occlusion. “We strive to space out injections as safely as possible for patients. Fortunately, many of the modern injections last much longer and can be dosed less frequently.”
Outside of the office, Dr. Chung enjoys spending time with his family, antiquing, visiting new countries, and enjoying the local cuisines.
